I understand that it is part of baseball that some teams have a lot and some have nothing. But I have an expansion team (Florida Marlins) and I by no means have a star studded roster. I can't afford a pot to pee in but you have the Yankees (all respect due, great GM) that can just buy every stud in free agency.
Either we need to allow small market teams more re-signs so fewer make it to free agency or we need to put in some sort of cap. There is no way I can ever dream of being competitive with the Yankees. I understand real teams do it but they also have:
The luxury tax
FA Compensation
The ability to re-sign whoever they want
Can we get the FA compensation brought back at the very least? At least let us small markets stock our minor leagues while we wait to lose them to the Yankees.
Chad,
You are not the only one to complain about this recently. I've had at least four different GM's complain about the financial landscape and the ability to field a team. The financially wealthy teams are the only ones winning currently. However, I think that was part of baseball in this era. The wildcard helped and begins this season in our league. That should help.
I also agree that FA compensation would help but we also agreed to turn it off at the start of the season. I am not opposed to turning it back on but we have to realize it is not perfect. Players that make zero sense being tied to a draft pick will be.
As far as a tax, I plan to turn that feature on in 1997 when it actually started in the MLB. I am not open to discussing beginning it sooner. The FA compensation is on the table for a league discussion but the luxury tax will follow with the actual history of the MLB and come in during 1997. It is only 3 seasons away.
I think the financial landscape is fine mostly. I like running small market teams for the challenge and always have. I do think it would be ideal to implement some kind of compensation though for top players. I am in another league where they manually assign supplemental picks between the first and second round for players. Only the top players qualify. Maybe a thought.
he will never do this because it will impact his honey bunny he cheats for
I vote we leave it like it is, I mean if we do compensation and they sign 3 studs, they only can lose one pick. You think thats going to slow the big market teams down? Thats not slowing Yankees/Dodgers or any of them down. I don't think so. And us small market teams, I really cant afford to lose a pick to sign one stud, so I'm against it. I think the luxury tax should be implemented like it was IRL at the time coming ahead. Not sure the year.
