I just signed Bob Welch to a contract to be my 5th starter. He signs. Then up and retires a couple of weeks later to go into broadcasting. Wish he'd made this decision before I missed out on other potential starters. I guess Miguel Batista will just get thrown right into the fire to replace Ramon Martinez.

It appears he had a 'storyline injury' which has happened a few times in the league but never to a freshly signed FA. It is usually a guy that is a free agent or already on a team. I guess he got injured over Christmas and had a 12+ month recovery and decided to just retire. Which is good for you really. He could have ate up a 40-man roster spot and salary instead. :)
What's funny was I was just commenting the other day I hoped Welch got with a good team and gave 300 wins a run. He was always one of my favorite pitchers from my childhood. I collected his cards. He had an outside shot at 300 in our league but he needed a good team around him for another 4 seasons to get there. Looks like that won't happen now.
