Los Angeles, CA - Word out of Los Angeles is that the late round selection of Quincy Carter, QB was meant as a wake up call to Jeff George who has underwhelmed in black and silver. In two seasons under center for the Raiders,  George has amassed 48 touchdowns but 40 interceptions as well. Head coach Mike Shannahan has struggled to replace Joe Montana since winning a Superbowl with the all-time great. Many on the roster and in Los Angeles feel that the Raiders have the talent everywhere else to compete for a Superbowl right now but quarterback is the one position they can't get right.

Coach Shannahan had the following to say "Look, we draft based on need. Jeff and Rich will start the season in the drivers seats and mentoring Quincy. But if we feel Quincy gives us the best chance to win ballgames, he is who will take the field."

The Raiders had a hugely successful draft the last two years, selecting the defensive rookie of the year for 1999 and 2000 defensive player of the year Patrick Kearney who logged 19 and 22 sacks. In the last 8 seasons the Raiders have selected three defensive rookie of the years in Keith Brookings, Patrick Kearney and Marco Coleman.  Many feel the Raiders defense is in a 3 year window where a Superbowl is possible.

On offense, Stephen Davis, the offensive line and wide receiver corps are all top notch. It really comes down to who runs the offense.

ESPN's Stephen A. Smith said "Look, Jeff George is the problem, was the problem, will be the problem. I'm not sure Quincy Carter is the answer. Listen Skip, let's face it, he ain't the answer alright. I said it, I said it. But he ain't the problem either."

Skip Bayliss then pitched the Raiders trading for one of the many intriguing backups in the league such as Trent Dilfer, Jay Fielder or Scott Mitchell to run the team.

"It is going to be a shame if the Raiders fail to capitalize on this window because they cannot fix the most important position on the team that has been a problem for ten seasons," said a fan.

The Raiders have not been in the playoffs since 1996 and their offensive production has steadily declined since then. In 1988 the team put up 38 points a game and kept their production in the ballpark of 28-38 points the entire tenure of Montana notching a 6-2 playoff record during that stretch. The Raiders have played only 4 playoff games since, going 0-4. All of those were on the strength of a Bo Jackson and Tim Brown led offense, who have long since retired.

Word is that GM Dan Gallows has put out a series of feelers around the league to inquire about some of the non-utilized QB talent sitting on rosters. "I'm not going to confirm or deny that. I'll just say I wouldn't be good at my job if I didn't proactively try to help my team. We want to win and win now."

I dig it. Wish we had more of this on the forums and less noise. :)

SanDiego

And yet I tried to trade you Troy Aikman and you wouldn't take him.

Nice read. I think my 49ers are coming on strong. Maybe we can get a Superbowl rematch from the early seasons. I hope there is a better outcome for me though. :)

My team is one elite WR away I feel like. I am hoping Mushin Muhammad can be that for me. I went way over his asking price in free agency.

Yeah you are doing good work over there. I wouldn't mind a repeat of Superbowl 1. :)

#5
Los Angeles, CA -- Raiders Coach Mike Shanahan has stated after the team lost 5 of the last 6 games that a change at quarterback is coming. He has not decided yet if Quincy Carter is ready for the task and may go with Rich Gannon for a veteran leader at the helm while Carter receives a heavy dose of training focus from the coach, offensive coordinator and mentorship from the veteran leaders at QB on staff.

"We are throwing every resource we have at Quincy, he is probably the most supported quarterback in the league at this point. Everything we can focus on him, we are," said Coach Shanahan.

So far, Carter has only minimally improved which worries some of the Raiders staff who spoke on the condition of anonymity. However, Coach Shanahan stated that with the lack of available quarterbacks in the upcoming draft and free agency, it was Quincy Carter's spot to lose in the immediate future.

Trent Dilfer as of this writing has been an abysmal failure at quarterback. While he is on pace to throw for a career record number of yards and completion percentage, he has thrown 11 interceptions to only 5 touchdown tosses. One Raider fan stated 'who cares if you throw for 4000 yards if you throw 10 touchdowns and 25 interceptions!!!"

Outside of an minor successful year in 1996, Trent Dilfer has been a below average quarterback his entire career. It's not certain that will ever change. Fans are not happy about the 2nd round pick they gave up which at the moment projects to be in the top 40 picks.

Raider fans will have to wait until gameday to find out who the starter will be as Coach Shanahan was clear: "We have an open quarterback position. The next week in practice will determine who starts. We don't know who that will be. The players will determine that."

Raider nation was split on an ESPN poll with 35% wanting to give Quincy Carter a change to grow, 32% wanted Rich Gannon, 23% wanted Jeff George, 8% wanted to trade for another QB and 2% wanted to stick with Trent Dilfer.

Raiders GM Daniel Galloway agrees. "Look, when you throw 4 interceptions and 0 touchdowns against the winless Dallas Cowboys that is inexcusable. That loss may very well have put us out of playoff contention. It's the difference in sitting here at 4-4 and 3-5 in what has become a very competitive division. At 4-4 we are likely aggressive pursing players for a playoff push. At 3-5, I have to be very cautious. That game mattered a lot and pretty much sealed Dilfer's career in Los Angeles. We are not pleased."

If you want to trade your 1st you can have Brad Johnson now. :)

I can't believe my team is 3-5. I've had to start AJ Feely all year too because Charlie Batch who I gave a 5 mil a year contract to (wtf is with qb demands?!?!) has had a concussion the whole season. He got it in pre-season and hasn't played a single snap all season.

Somehow I've won 3 games and almost beat your Raiders. Like, I have a stock playbook right now too. Just whatever Buddy Ryan picks because I don't have my team assembled yet. I wasn't going to waste time making a custom book for these chumps.

But they are playing with some heart man. Terrible roster but they got grit. Every game has been super close. Makes me want to do a playbook for them now. They deserve some effort from me because they legitimately could win this division I'm in. Would be nuts.

Man, Todd Collins has been on the block forever and no one has come after him. Guy has thrown 60 TDs the last two years and no one has offered on him.

Make me a legitimate offer and you may find your QB you want so bad.

still better than any taem ran by dunnbo the dummy.

I'll be completely honest. I am not sure I'll ever chase the high end, high dollar quarterbacks again. Most of the Superbowl champions have had mid-range guys at QB and look at my current situation. Eric Zeier was a trash heap free agent signing and Brunnell has been hurt the last two years for significant chunks. Zeier is putting up MVP caliber numbers both years. So much so to the point I may start him the rest of the year. We've been winning with him. https://fbblretro.com/NFL88/Players/Player.html?id=4609

I'd say start Quincy Carter and move on. Dilfer and George have had tons of chances and flopped. Gannon and Carter are the only two I'd consider.

Gannon had some good years and may be worth a look. Just my two lincolns. I did enjoy this read.
