Eager fans turned out for a matchup between the Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros.

Houston had no answer for Chicago Cubs hurler Tom Gordon, who overwhelmed Astros hitters as the Cubs coasted to victory, 7-0. The winner was Gordon. He threw 6.1 innings of shutout ball. The loser was Darryl Kile.

Bobby Higginson had a big 3-run home run for the Cubs in the top of the eighth inning. With Chicago leading 3-0 and runners on 1st and 3rd, he got a fastball from Mike Williams, who finished 5th in the AL in saves with 34 in 1996, and swatted a home run to left-center. It was his 24th home run of the season, and more importantly, it put the Cubs ahead, 6-0.

"When I go out there," said Gordon, "the last thing I want to do is let my teammates down."

The third-place Cubs improved to 82-60.
