Late Rally by Cardinals Locks Up 5-2 Win
|
Riding the 3-hit performance of the former first round draft pick Ronnie Belliard, the St. Louis Cardinals stopped the Milwaukee Brewers, 5-2, in 9 innings. Pedro Martinez got the win, improving to 13-7. He pitched 8 innings, giving up 7 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 10 and walking 2. Heathcliff Slocumb picked up the save for St. Louis, his 36th of the year.
Belliard had a game-changing triple in the bottom of the eighth. On a 1-0 changeup from Chris Peters, he banged a bases-clearing triple to left-center, giving the Cardinals a 5-2 lead. It was the 2nd triple of the year for Belliard.
"I like our moxie," said Cardinals manager Jason Howard.
With the victory, the Cardinals upped their record to 87-59.
