Reese Helps Cubs Beat Pirates, 12-8
A 6-RBI performance from the two-time All-Star Pokey Reese helped the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 12-8. The winning pitcher was John Burkett. His record now stands at 12-9. The right-hander went 7.2 innings, allowing 1 run on 2 hits for the Cubs. The win lifted the Chicago record to 88-66.

Randy Winn had a big 2-run double for the Cubs in the bottom of the first inning. With Chicago leading 1-0 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he got a slider from Scott Garrelts, who finished 2nd in the NL in ERA with 3.31 in 1996, and swatted a double to center. It was his 29th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Cubs ahead, 3-0.

"It was a solid team effort," said Winn after the game.
