In a low-scoring contest between the Houston Astros and the Milwaukee Brewers, Dwight Gooden, who finished 4th in the NL in ERA with 2.19 in 1988, proved to be the difference. The Houston right-hander earned props for his performance in the 3-2 Astros win. Mariano Rivera got credit for the save for Houston. It was his 28th of the year. The Astros are now 63-56, while the Brewers fall to 74-45.
Luis Gonzalez, who finished 3rd in the NL in RBI with 128 in 1991, chipped in a solo home run for Houston in the bottom of the sixth. For the game, the left fielder had 2 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 2 runs scored, and 1 run batted in.
Gonzalez attributed the win to his team's "focus and intensity."
