Cubs Throttled by Reds, 3-1
|
The umbrellas came out during the Cincinnati-Chicago contest at Wrigley Field.
Cincinnati Reds pitcher Jeff Weaver was in fine form, leading his team past the Chicago Cubs, 3-1. Weaver yielded no runs over 5.1 innings to notch the win. He scattered 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. His record improves to 2-1. The save went to Chuck McElroy, his 2nd this season.
Cincinnati won the game in part because of Marcus Thames. The left fielder ripped a solo home run in the top of the second inning to put the Reds ahead, 1-0. For the game, Thames had 1 double and 1 home run in 4 at-bats.
"Jeff -- his tempo and rhythm were good," said Reds manager Stephen Wardle. "He was the key to us winning."
The Cubs drop to 5-8, as their fitful start to the 2004 campaign continues.
