The Detroit Tigers did just enough to sneak past the Chicago White Sox, 8-7, at Comiskey Park. Detroit first baseman Jim Thome, in particular, had a standout performance. Detroit reliever Mike Matthews picked up the win, raising his record to 1-0. Byung-hyun Kim was tagged with the loss. The White Sox, now 4-14, continue their slow start.

The game was at a stalemate until shortstop Rafael Furcal came to bat in the top of the ninth. Facing Chicago pitcher Matt Thornton, he hit a 2-0 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Detroit on top, 8-7.

"Honestly, I'm not frustrated," said Chicago manager Nate Young. "The effort was great."
