In a low-scoring affair between the Detroit Tigers and the Chicago Cubs, pitcher Javier Vazquez was the difference between victory and defeat. The Detroit right-hander earned accolades for his stellar performance in the 3-2 Tigers win. Vazquez, now 6-3, was the winner. In 8 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 5, walking 3, and allowing 2 runs. The save went to Scott Downs, his 2nd this season.

Who knows how it would've ended, had it not been for Jim Thome? The 29-year old first baseman Thome stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the ninth inning to put Detroit up, 3-2. For the game, he was 2 for 4, including 1 double and 1 single.

"I felt great. Had good rhythm with my mechanics," said Vazquez.

The Tigers, at 32-22, lead by one game in their division.
