Diamondbacks Lose By a Run at Chicago
The Chicago Cubs picked up a win at Wrigley Field, dropping the Arizona Diamondbacks, 5-4. Greg Maddux, who finished 3rd in the NL in strikeouts with 186 in 1990, was the difference-maker. In 7 innings, Maddux surrendered 8 hits, while striking out 8 and walking 2. He allowed 4 runs. Grant Balfour notched his 9th save in 10 chances.

Had John Olerud not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Olerud hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 5-4, in favor of the Cubs.

"I liked his command," said Chicago manager Adam Spencer. "Greg was throwing strikes."

Chicago is last in the NL Central Division with a record of 24-37.
