Cubs Snatch Late-Game, 7-6 Win
The Chicago Cubs overcame a good performance by St. Louis center fielder Jim Edmonds to knock off St. Louis, 7-6, in 12 innings at Wrigley Field. Edmonds went 2 for 5 with 2 home runs and a walk, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice. Chicago reliever Randy Flores picked up the win. Norm Charlton, who finished 5th in the NL in saves with 34 in 1996, took the loss for St. Louis. The victory gives Chicago a record of 86-65.

The Cubs got a clutch hit from shortstop Aaron Boone. In the bottom of the 12th, he delivered a run-scoring single to win the game for the Cubs.

"Sometimes winning takes more than 27 outs," said Cubs manager Adam Spencer.
