Braves Earn 6-4 Home Win
|
Atlanta Braves starter John Smoltz pitched well against the New York Mets at Turner Field, leading his team to a win, 6-4. Smoltz, the winner, moves to 14-11. He threw 8 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 7 and giving up 1 walk. LaTroy Hawkins closed the door for Atlanta, picking up his 31st save of the year.
Javy Lopez had a big grand slam home run for the Braves in the bottom of the third inning. With Atlanta leading 1-0 and the bases loaded, he sized up a fastball from 27-year old right-handed pitcher Brian Tollberg and punished it. The result was his 29th home run of the season, which put the Braves on top, 5-0.
"We cashed in when we had the chance," said Atlanta manager Brandon Quick.
The 4th-place Braves have won 4 straight.
